A new-build or renovation brief should include the technology people expect to use in the finished space. Bring those requirements into the conversation while room layouts, access and the construction schedule are still being coordinated.
The useful first step is a marked-up drawing and a short list of decisions. This guide is general preparation advice, not an account of a particular customer project.
Give each connection a purpose.
Identify work areas, likely equipment locations and room activities. Ask where the network equipment will sit, who needs access to it and which devices still need to be chosen. List requirements for phones, wireless access, cameras or AV when they are part of the project.
Keep possible future uses distinct from the agreed installation. That gives the design team a chance to discuss access and alternatives without treating an idea as a promised deliverable.
Make coordination explicit.
Identify who approves drawings, arranges access and coordinates the building, electrical and technology work. Share dates for framing, insulation, finishes and any inspections or other dependencies known to the project team.
Ask each provider to identify what they supply, install, configure and check. Make exclusions and work assigned to others visible before comparing quotes. The exact cable, equipment and installation requirements depend on the agreed design.
Define the handoff before the work begins.
- Which locations and routes should appear on the final records?
- What labeling and checks are included?
- Who sets up the equipment after the physical work?
- Who receives the documentation and agreed access?
- How will changes to the plan be approved and recorded?
A clear handoff helps the next person understand what was installed and what remains to be done. Put those expectations in the scope rather than assuming every provider includes the same work.
